Introduction

On behalf of King Saud University Medical City, we are proud to nominate the EndoWeld Ultrasonic Obturation System for this prestigious award. This initiative represents a complete and exemplary journey of biomedical innovation: from a fundamental university invention to a clinically validated technology now on the cusp of global commercialization.

EndoWeld directly revolutionizes the critical final step of root canal therapy-obturation. Invented by Dr. Mohammed Alshehri, it solves the persistent clinical problem of inadequate sealing caused by conventional heated gutta-percha, which shrinks and leaves voids. The core innovation is a smart polymer point that, under controlled ultrasonic energy, becomes temporarily flowable to penetrate the entire root canal anatomy, including lateral canals, before solidifying into a perfect seal upon energy cessation (as protected by US Patent 11,957,529 B2 and Saudi Patent SA 14693 B1).

This project has rapidly matured along three parallel, successful tracks:

• Robust Intellectual Property & Scientific Validation: Building on the initial patent, the team has filed three additional U.S. applications, securing a pipeline for a bioactive composition and an integrated device. Scientific rigor is demonstrated by an ex vivo micro-CT study confirming the technique reduces filling voids by 40-75% while maintaining safe temperatures below 45°C.
• Strategic Global Commercialization: Recognizing the technology's potential, a partnership was formed with Swiss med-tech leader WW Technologies, leveraging their BoneWelding® platform. This led to the establishment of EndoWeld SA, a dual-headquartered spin-off company in Saudi Arabia and Switzerland. This collaboration pairs Saudi intellectual property with world-class engineering and manufacturing.
• Alignment with National Vision & Clinical Impact: EndoWeld operationalizes Saudi Vision 2030 by transferring knowledge, enabling local production, and positioning the Kingdom as a hub for advanced medical technology. Its strategic objective is to deliver an affordable, single-use device that significantly reduces procedure time, improves patient comfort, and lowers retreatment rates worldwide.

With a secured production agreement, active regulatory preparations, and clinical trials slated for 2026, EndoWeld is poised to deliver the world's first ultrasonic obturation system to the global market. We submit this initiative as a definitive model of how locally conceived genius, when supported by institutional commitment and strategic international partnership, can generate transformative healthcare solutions with profound local and global impact.
