Organization Description:

Yum! Brands is one of the world's largest restaurant companies, operating global brands across more than 150 countries. The company is driven by a clear purpose, to unlock opportunity and growth for its people, franchise partners, and communities by delivering great food experiences and building a culture of trust, capability, and performance.

Introduction

Frontline performance depends on leadership consistency. In a high volume restaurant environment, the Area Coach role is the bridge between strategy and what happens on every shift across restaurants.

HR identified a capability gap. Traditional leadership approaches often focused on people leadership or business performance, rarely both, and were not designed for modern workforce expectations around trust, coaching, and growth. This created risk across retention, execution consistency, and guest experience.

LIFT, Leaders Inspired for Tomorrow, was created as an HR led solution to close that gap. HR positioned this not as training, but as a structured leadership management practice to strengthen frontline capability and consistency at scale.

What happened

HR led the design through field immersion and cross functional planning. We partnered with Area Coaches across UAE, KSA, and Pakistan to understand their day to day reality, shadow roles, and identify leadership moments that influence team experience and restaurant performance. The model was built with Area Coaches, for Area Coaches.

HR also partnered with Operations and Marketing to embed a shared understanding of Modern Brand and Modern Experience, ensuring the leadership model reflects business direction and real execution conditions.

Innovation in HR management, planning, and practice

LIFT is an HR designed leadership management system that standardizes how frontline leadership capability is built, reinforced, and sustained. HR repositioned frontline leadership from an individual capability to a structured organizational system that can be managed, reinforced, and scaled.

It integrates two dimensions:

People leadership, trust, coaching, growth conversations, and voice.

Business leadership, execution consistency, accountability, and ownership mindset.

The model is delivered as a journey with structured touchpoints, application in restaurants, and ongoing coaching to reinforce behavior change. HR now manages LIFT as a repeatable leadership standard across markets.

Achievement and scale

Since launch, LIFT has scaled across three markets:

Developed 92 frontline leaders across UAE, KSA, and Pakistan Influenced execution across 900+ restaurants.

Impacted 21,000+ employees through stronger day to day leadership Scaled through 12 certified trainers supporting expansion.

Impact, before vs after

The UAE pilot provided a clean measurement window.

Before LIFT

  • Engagement 69%
  • Inclusion 70%
  • Intent to stay 70%
  • Turnover 5%

After LIFT

  • Engagement 70%
  • Inclusion 72%
  • Intent to stay 86%
  • Turnover 3%

Engagement remained stable, while commitment strengthened significantly. The increase in intent to stay and reduction in turnover signal stronger leadership driven retention and stability.

Guest experience impact

Guest experience outcomes strengthened in the same period. Overall guest satisfaction increased from 46% to 63%.

Operational drivers improved:

  • Accuracy +15%
  • Service +14%
  • Speed +15%
  • Cleanliness +13%
  • Taste +16%

Leadership consistency became a stabilizer for execution, strengthening guest experience and supporting performance momentum.

Conclusion

LIFT is a scalable HR led leadership operating model built from the frontline and aligned to business direction. It strengthens how leaders lead people and how they lead the business, driving measurable shifts in inclusion, intent to stay, turnover, execution consistency, and guest satisfaction.
