Qatif Health Network is one of the components of the Eastern Health Cluster. The network includes Qatif Central Hospital, Prince Muhammad Bin Fahd General Hospital and Hereditary Blood Diseases Hospital, in addition to 28 primary health centres with 3 UCCs with a capacity of 335 beds and one fitness center.
The Nursing Olympics Competition is conducted annually as a structured, interactive educational assessment for nursing staff across departments. The program consists of scenario-based questions and clinical challenges that simulate real-world patient care situations requiring rapid assessment, critical thinking, prioritization, and appropriate intervention. Scenarios reflect high-risk, high-frequency clinical situations such as patient deterioration, medication safety, infection control, emergency response and pharmaceutical knowledge.
Part of the questions are developed using content from CME-accredited courses provided by Nursing Professional Development (NPD), institutional policies, and evidence-based safety practices. This ensures alignment with current standards of care and reinforces key learning objectives from completed educational activities. Other questions are used to evaluate the knowledge gap of nurses to some specific categories such as medical surgical, emergency care etc. The competition format encourages teamwork, engagement, and application of knowledge rather than rote memorization. Participants are evaluated on accuracy, clinical reasoning, and adherence to best practices. Performance data are collected and analyzed to identify strengths, learning gaps, and trends across units or specialties.
The results serve multiple purposes: validating the effectiveness of educational programs, identifying individual and departmental learning needs, and informing leadership decisions regarding future education priorities. Findings are incorporated into the annual nursing education plan to support continuous professional development, patient safety, and quality improvement.
The competition format was designed in an attractive way to motivate learning, two teams of three will compete in a set up similar to who want to be a millionaire, with three help options (omit two options, call a friend , or ask the audience) teams will take turns to answer the questions whoever answers more questions correctly within 30 minutes will win the match and move to the next phase, semi finals and finals. The competition allows audience to attend to maximize learning opportunities not only to the competitors but to the audience as well.
Entry Sources & Additional Supporting Information
The Nursing Olympics introduces an innovative, gamified approach to competency assessment and education. By transforming traditional evaluations into an interactive competition, the project increases motivation, engagement, and knowledge retention. The use of realistic clinical scenarios bridges the gap between education and practice, encouraging nurses to apply learning in a meaningful way.
The integration of performance analytics to guide future education planning adds significant value. This data-driven approach ensures educational resources are targeted, efficient, and aligned with actual learning needs. The project promotes a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement within nursing practice.
