MIRAL IS THE LEADING CREATOR OF IMMERSIVE DESTINATIONS AND EXPERIENCES THAT CONTRIBUTES TO THE GROWTH OF THE LEISURE & ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY AND ABU DHABI'S ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION.
Yas Island Abu Dhabi is a world-class entertainment destination, but in an increasingly competitive global tourism landscape, maintaining top-of-mind awareness requires innovative storytelling and high-impact media engagement. The challenge was to elevate Yas Island's global status and break through the noise in a crowded market where destinations vie for international audiences. The campaign needed to go beyond simply showcasing Yas Island's diverse offerings - it had to create a cultural moment that would captivate global media and engage new, diverse audiences.
To achieve this, Yas Island partnered with basketball icon and global entertainer Shaquille O'Neal to launch the "What Can't We Do" campaign, anchored by a bold, high-energy rap video.
Multi-talented and multi-faceted, that's the perfect way to describe both Shaq and Yas Island. Shaq has proven there's nothing he can't do, whether it's dominating the basketball court, releasing platinum-selling rap albums, acting, or DJing. His larger-than-life persona perfectly aligned with Yas Island's versatility and promise of limitless experiences, making him the ideal figure to drive media attention and audience engagement. To further enhance the campaign's regional relevance and youth appeal, Yas Island collaborated with Flipperachi, a celebrated artist with strong influence in the Arab world. By incorporating his distinctive style and cultural resonance, the campaign became a viral, cross-cultural movement that connected with regional audiences while maintaining global impact - ultimately driving tourism interest.
The innovation lay in transforming Shaq from a traditional celebrity endorser into a central storytelling force. Rather than appearing as a brand face, he was woven directly into the campaign narrative through a high-energy rap video that showcased Yas Island's attractions in an entertaining and culturally resonant way. Featuring alongside Flipperachi, the video blended global star power with local relevance, enabling the campaign to connect authentically with younger audiences while retaining international appeal.
The use of Shaq extended far beyond video content. Targeted media outreach secured exclusive interviews with Flipperachi for top-tier media in the UAE and Bahrain. Experiential activations included Formula SHAQ, a one-of-a-kind F1 car designed to fit Shaq, which was placed as a temporary installation at Yas Bay during Formula 1, encouraging fan engagement and photo opportunities. The Yas Island x Shaq Rap Challenge on Channel 4's English breakfast show captivated local audiences, with hosts energizing listeners through rap showdowns and challenges and offering a two-night Yas Island staycation as the grand prize, further driving community engagement. Digital amplification across Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok created an integrated ecosystem where audiences could interact with the content, generate their own responses, and share their experiences.
The campaign delivered outstanding results: the video garnered 394M views, social impressions reached 591M, post engagements totaled 20M, and media reach expanded to 38.4M, surpassing initial targets. Audiences were captivated not only by the star power of Shaq and Flipperachi, but also by the inventive approach to showcasing Yas Island in an entertaining, culturally resonant, and shareable format. The video gained such traction that Virgin Radio's Kris Fade Show organically picked up the campaign, engaging millions of listeners with a live on-air freestyle rap battle set to the track.
By reimagining how a global icon can be used in destination marketing, Yas Island Abu Dhabi demonstrated innovation in celebrity partnerships. The Shaq collaboration went beyond endorsement to deliver entertainment, cultural relevance, and meaningful audience connection - setting a new benchmark for how public figures can be authentically and creatively embedded into brand storytelling.
