"I never imagined my idea about preserving indigenous crops would matter on a global platform." These words came from a student at TCS Sustainathon South Africa 2025, moments after her team presented a solution inspired by traditional farming practices. Just a few days earlier, in Saudi Arabia, a student shared, "I want to use technology to make fresh food accessible in desert cities." Two students. Two countries. One shared challenge - Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security, the theme of TCS Sustainathon 2025 across both regions. Yet the solutions they proposed could not have been more different. This is the beauty of a multicultural world. And this is why TCS Sustainathon stands out as a powerful example of 'Innovation in Multicultural Marketing': a platform where diverse cultures shape unique expressions of sustainability, community, and impact.
What is TCS Sustainathon
Tata Consultancy Services is a global IT services, consulting, and business solutions organization with over 600,000 consultants across 55 countries. TCS Sustainathon is our flagship youth competition that empowers students to solve real-world sustainability problems using technology. In 2025, we launched two major editions - Saudi Arabia (2nd edition) and South Africa (4th edition) - both united by one global sustainability theme, yet deeply influenced by local culture, lived experiences, and community realities.
A Multicultural Challenge That Brought Out Cultural Intelligence
The decision to run the same Sustainathon theme in two culturally distinct countries revealed something extraordinary: while the challenge was global, the solutions were profoundly local.
In Saudi, students focused strongly on desert agriculture, water scarcity, hydroponics, and smart
greenhouse automation - ideas that reflect the Kingdom's climate, food import dependence, and the cultural emphasis on self-sufficiency outlined in Vision 2030.
In South Africa, solutions leaned into indigenous crops, community farming models, food accessibility in townships, AI-driven pest management, and circular agriculture.
This rich contrast highlighted exactly what multicultural marketing is supposed to do - celebrate differences, embrace authentic voices, and allow communities to see themselves in a global narrative.
Innovative Multicultural Marketing Across Two Continents
For TCS, a B2B company, building a youth-facing brand presence across two vastly different regions required a marketing reinvention. We adopted a culturally sensitive, geographically tailored,
hyper-local model.
In Saudi Arabia, we used channels popular among youth - WhatsApp, X - along with campus newsletters, radio shows, and partnerships with local universities. Communication was bilingual, content was built around local symbolism, and female participation was encouraged with travel support to respect cultural norms.
In South Africa, the approach shifted to campus ambassadors, WhatsApp groups, student innovation hubs, and collaborations with educational organizations. Messaging focused on community empowerment, grassroots innovation, and sustainability tied to local heritage. Two Nations, One Shared Impact
Across both regions, over 4M+ students engaged with our digital campaigns, generating hundreds of ideas rooted in local realities. In South Africa, we received a whopping 400+ registrations, and over 200 in Saudi Arabia. The participation of women in both countries was remarkable. In Saudi Arabia, many were first-generation women entering STEM fields, while in South Africa, young women saw Sustainathon as an opportunity to uplift their communities through innovation.
A New Benchmark in Multicultural Brand Building
By running a single global theme across two culturally different countries - and allowing each culture to shape the storytelling, outreach, and solutions - TCS Sustainathon demonstrated how multicultural marketing can drive relevance, authenticity, and meaningful impact.
This is why TCS Sustainathon MEA initiative deserves the Stevie Award for Innovation in Multicultural Marketing. Not just for marketing across cultures - but for building a movement where culture leads innovation, youth lead change, and technology leads towards a sustainable future.
