- Organization Description:
teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, the largest purpose-built space by teamLab in the world, is a multi-sensory experience designed to engage with audiences through art, taking guests on an ever-changing philosophical journey of discovery and reflection.
The grand opening of teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi reimagined what a cultural event could be, turning a launch into a fully immersive, participatory experience. Every element of the evening was designed to engage guests in unexpected ways, making them active participants rather than passive spectators. The Saadiyat Cultural District, with its surrounding museums and future landmarks, became a living stage, where architecture, technology, and human interaction merged to create a groundbreaking event.
From the outset, the arrival experience set a new benchmark for innovation. Instead of a traditional red carpet, guests walked along a bold black pathway activated by interactive digital installations.
Every step triggered light and motion, transforming each visitor into a co-creator and immediately blurring the line between audience and artwork. The entrance itself became part of the event's storytelling, introducing participants to the exhibition through movement and engagement.
The evening was structured around two distinct experiences, each designed to appeal to a wide and diverse audience, including cultural leaders, art enthusiasts, media, and international guests. A carefully curated mix of global figures, including Cate Blanchett, Andrew Garfield, Natalia Dyer, Pom Klementieff, Swizz Beatz, and Flying Lotus, interacted organically with the installations, demonstrating the accessibility and universality of the experience. Their participation highlighted the event's ability to connect people from all backgrounds with innovative art and technology.
Inside the venue, guests explored large-scale interactive installations that evolved in real time, responding to movement, touch, and presence. The exhibition was deliberately non-linear, allowing each visitor to choose their own journey. This freedom encouraged spontaneous interactions, collaborative moments, and shared discovery, creating an event that was as much about personal experience as it was about collective engagement.
As the night deepened, the event extended outdoors into an unprecedented spectacle. 6,300 synchronized drones illuminated the sky above Saadiyat Island, performing a choreographed light show alongside a live performance by world-renowned pianist Ludovico Einaudi. The drones' abstract forms visualized concepts of energy, impermanence, and interconnectedness, turning the skyline itself into a dynamic part of the event. Fireworks and a descending beam of light at the venue entrance created a climactic moment of celebration, marking the official opening in a visually and emotionally unforgettable way.
The event concluded with a reflection area beneath the open sky, designed to foster conversation and connection. Guests paused to process the experience, bridging the transition from immersive, interactive installations to shared human dialogue. Music, conversation, and celebration continued organically, reinforcing the sense that this was not just an opening, but a new model for event design in the region.
The grand opening of teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi demonstrated innovation in concept, design, and execution. Every detail-from the participatory arrival experience to the multi-sensory drone performance-was crafted to redefine audience engagement, creating a template for future immersive events globally.
